Keeping RTK fix under spruce canopy

I’m running a Trimble R12 rover on NTRIP, logging at 1 Hz on a 2.2 m pole, and keep losing centimeter-level lock under dense spruce; today I dropped to float every few minutes while mapping a contact along a 400 m traverse. Anyone found a reliable combo of antenna options or data collection tweaks to hold fix without jumping to a total station or post-processed GNSS?

A cheap fix that’s helped me: snap a 20–30 cm ground plane (“pizza pan” hat) under the R12 to tame canopy multipath; it cut my “drop to float” to near zero on spruce transects. Are you already running a 15–20° elevation mask?

On my R12, switching the NTRIP stream to a true single-base mountpoint (nearest) instead of VRS/MAX kept fix under spruce — less interpolation jitter when the canopy forces brief slips. If you’ve got a base within about 10 km, try the ‘nearest/single-base’ option; the caveat is it can be a touch noisier if the base is farther. Curious whether your drops line up with VRS cell handoffs.

But along with @gabriel94’s mountpoint tip, try bumping the elevation mask to about 18–20° so it ignores the noisy low-e sats under spruce — like sky noise-cancelling; you’ll lose a few SVs but the fix usually steadies. What’s your current mask angle?
