Mercalli, not Mw, explains the cracks

I keep hearing ‘a 5.2 did all that damage,’ but damage tracks shaking intensity (Modified Mercalli), while Mw is the energy - same magnitude can mean very different outcomes depending on depth and site soils. What landslide or quake myth do you run into - rainfall thresholds, calling every slump a “mudslide,” etc?
